Choosing the Right Photographer For Your Modeling Portfolio

Choosing the Right Photographer For Your Modeling Portfolio is not an easy task.  The first thing one must identify is results.  There are many people claiming to be professional photographer today.  With the accessibility of digital cameras and $100 websites it is easy for models to get lost in a world of mediocre people claiming to be professional photographers only to find themselves with bad images and hundreds of dollars gone from their pockets.  The first thing I would tell you to do is check their work out.  Does it look like the work you want to get.  Does it look like the pages in a magazine or does it look like something your mother could have shot.  Do the models in their portfolios look like professional models or like a kid they shot from a mall.  Is the lighting flat or harsh or does it exude the qualities of the top photographers whose work is showcased each month in magazines and advertisements.  Has any of the prospective photographers work been published and where.  Published works are called “tearsheets” and are very important indicators of true professionalism.  They show a concept was agreed upon, conceived, and completed in an exceptional way.  Finally chosen for publication.  How long they have been shooting has some to bear but I have seen photographers who have been working for 20+ years whose work is no better than someone who picked up a camera 2 weeks ago.  MDP_5004RTCH_pp

Your common sense usually can tell you all you need to know when looking for a photographer but beware, there are many more salesmen out there than talented photographers.  Many of which should be selling used cars since they could sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman wearing white gloves in August.  Look at the work and that should tell you volumes.  Also look at the quality of their website as this is generally the most important showcase they have for their work.  A Model Mayhem post or One Model Place does not count.  Having those isn’t bad but need to point you to their “real” website.  If they only have a Model Mayhem or OMP site BEWARE!!! Most of the talented photographers I know really aren’t salespeople.  They are artists and love and are passionate about what they do and take tremendous pride in making beautiful images.  They also know the elements that must be present to create beautiful images consistently.

Have they worked with top model agencies and if so which ones. Top model agencies include IMG, Next, Elite,Mega,Ford, Wilhelmina, Women,MC2 ect.  Look at the work! You should be able to tell of they are shooting top talent.  How is the styling?; how is the hair and makeup?  Did the model do their own or was it done professionally.  That is another big clue for you who are looking for great results from a photo shoot.   Top hair and makeup artists will rarely work with inexperienced photographers since they won’t receive anything for their work.  Top stylists generally want to work with great photographers and talent so they can upgrade their books with new images of their makeup and hair styles on beautiful people.MDP_7858

Don’t fall into the trap of free photographs or TFP(Test for Prints) or TFCD(Test for CD of the images)  These photographers are starting out and unless you are willing to waste much of your time for the hope of a few “maybe” images you should pass.  This really is a place where you get what you pay for.  I do photograph some models for free but I am generally trying out a new concept or new piece of equipment or maybe just trying out a model before I use them on a big job.  Low prices can mean much of the same as a free photographer.  Photographers, in general, know what they are worth in the marketplace.  Most of the best photographers will charge by the “Look” which means per outfit.  I charge between $450 and $550 per three look test.  The price variance is based on location.  I ALWAYS use professional hair and makeup artists and they will charge $150 plus depending on their skill level.

MDP_4250RTCHAsk other models of their dealings as well.  Was the photographer polite, on-time, prepared?  Did he problem solve easily?  Did he give you what he promised?  Ask them about the effectiveness of their images with this photographer they recently shot with.  Any new jobs since the new photos?  Any new client interest?  Has anyone in the fashion business made mention of them(wow those are really beautiful ect)? It is very important to have a barometer on how the new images have helped or hurt your book.  Does the agency like them and put them in your book?  I have had the pleasure of shooting  models from every top agency in the world and am proud to say that my images have been used to promote them successfully.

Be careful out there!!! With all the kids running around with cameras they bought off Ebay of got as a gift from their parents, it is hard to separate the real from the pretenders.  Hope I gave you some ways to do so.  Feel free to call me directly for a quote or any questions you may have.  My cellular number is (954)529-1390

New Editorial Shoot Half Competed

Here is a new fashion editorial I have half completed with the beautiful Brazilian bombshell Carolinne Rossi from Next Model Management in Miami Beach.  As usual, Ron Gerard supplied me with a great casting for a different client where I found Carolinne.  We hit it off immediately and had this project a week later.  I think she pulled it off beautifully.  I think I am going to call the editorial spread “SHOOTER”.  The fabulous and spot-on hair and makeup was done by the amazing Sherilyn Segal.  She always makes me look good.   Also a very special thank you to artist Michael Perez for letting us use Gallery 212 in Miami as a deco backdrop for our story.  He had a blast playing with all of my guns.  His hospitality is beyond reproach!  Should wrap up the shoot this coming Monday.

Happy New Year from Matt Dunn Photography

Happy New Year to everyone.  My December was crazy with multiple shoots for ABC television as well as many agency shoots.  I feel blessed to have so many that trust me to take their visions to the next level.

Miami Beach, South Beach agencies are getting back after it bringing the world back to south Florida.  We, collectively, brought the world to and created South Beach out of a retirement idealism and back to a vibrant energetic and yes hedonistic place, well beyond its past glory in the ’50s and ’60’s!  The model agencies are attracting new and fabulous talent, both boys and girls, and the kid divisions are also poised to flourish.  We are all looking forward to the economy picking up and the stagnation in advertising ending.  Looking forward to a fun and fabulous resurgence on the beach.

All my best

Matt

Matt Dunn Modeling Images from 1980’s

By popular demand I am uploading my old model comp.  This goes to prove that I did actually model although it wasn’t my favorite part in the fashion business.

This was my composite in Chicago and I did lots of work for Imagnin, Montgomery Wards, Sears, and Marshall Field’s to name a few.

Funny to me how lack of photography sharpness was the norm back then.  Don’t get me wrong, I know them images are ancient and have faded especially since printed on cheap paper but thought it would be funny for those of you who know me but didn’t know this about my past.LOL!!!

CENTRAL and SOUTH FLORIDA UNIT PRODUCTION STILL PHOTOGRAPHER

As a Unit Production Stills Photographer in Florida my  job is to create two types of images. The first is, photos specifically intended for use in the publicity and marketing of feature films or television productions, shot as the main camera sees it, while the movie is being filmed. I am also always look for alternative angles and shots taken from a different point of view than the main camera as long as they can capture the movie mood and feel without altering the meaning of the scene.  The lighting and feel of the scenes integrity is always maintained without any embellishment from me or my exposures.  Simply stated, no flash and a similar look and feel to exposures set by the camera operators.

The second type of images I produce I call “BTS” or “behind the scenes”.  On the set I document the making of the movie or show and images includes close-ups of the actors and crew, wide shots of the crew shooting the action or even setting up the equipment, props etc. Basically anything that goes on behind the scenes that can still used for press releases and/or released to the media.

I shoot with top of the line NIKON bodies using the fastest and best lenses available ( I can shoot on low lit sets when needed with the fastest primes available on the market) and two professional sound blimps to reduce (almost mute) the sound of my camera’s motor drives & shutters, so its noise won’t get picked on the film’s recorded soundtrack while the action is rolling. All of the above must be done while not getting in the way of the crew, or even worse, without getting in the shot myself. In order to accomplish all this and get the job done it is extremely important to always understand and be aware of what’s happening on the set around me and what is going to happen next, and, last but not least be as invisible as possible and blend in with the crew/background.

FLORIDA UNIT PRODUCTION STILL PHOTOGRAPHER

I have been doing this type of work, professionally, for more than 13 years and am a regular on ABC and Disney features and shows.  I have done this work in Los Angeles in studio as well as on location and also in Florida in studio and location.  I make friends quickly and smoothy can operate within any set and any circumstance and have few limitations.  I am also quite familiar and used to tight budgets and fast turn-around.  I have fast portable hard drives which I can ship daily with the photography which is produced.

MDP_2233RTCHFMichele Pommier is at it again. Always the workaholic, Pommier is once again discovering and turning out models that will soon be at the top of the game. Working with her more than 25 years one can attest to Michele’s resolve in shaking things up in the modeling field.
Teaming up with many of the industries top names like Matt Dunn and his photography, she is pushing ahead of many who came after she built the empire and modeling business in south Florida more than 2 decades ago.
Pommier has always had the knack of finding unique, fabulous, and iconic faces. When she pairs that with the unique lens-work of noted fashion and celebrity photographer, Matt Dunn, something special happens. “The team is working like a well oiled machine”, Dunn remarked.” Having met Michele more than 25 years ago, she gave me my shot in the business by allowing me to photograph many of her top models, many of which went on to super-stardom”. Dunn added, “What a gift that was when Michele gave me birth in such a exclusive business”.

Located at 309 23rd street, suite 320, Miami Beach, Florida 33139, the magic continues. Along with Matt Dunn, Pommier is also partnering with Katia Sherman, president of Major Models. Sherman was her second in charge back in the greatest modeling boom in the late ‘80s and ‘90s. Together, they built Michele Pommier Models from a small agency in Coral Gables into a worldwide powerhouse agency whose billings were among the largest in the industry.

Interested parties should inquire at (305) 397-8036 or on the web at http://www.michelepommier.com/
POST TAKEN FROM MICHELE POMMIER MODELS SITE:
“We are a boutique agency, representing a small group of working models & talent, which gives
us the ability to work closely with them and concentrate on their individual careers.”

In the 1970’s, Miami Beach became known as God’s Waiting Room. It’s younger sons and
daughters looked around, cringed, and booked the next flight out. They couldn’t be blamed,
really. The area had decayed badly and there was no reason to stay.

Into this morass stepped Michele Pommier, a supermodel turned entrepreneur. Pommier took one
look at all that the fleeing youngsters waved away “the sunshine, the palm trees, that ocean!”
And saw opportunity. She envisioned a future where others saw a void.

Give Pommier credit for being the first to open a modeling agency in Miami, in 1979. She
recognized South Beach as a viable photo location, extolled its virtues, and challenged others to
join her. She raised the bar of the fashion and beauty industry of this area, bringing it up to
international standards.

This Westport, Connecticut native was one of the most recognized models in the ’70s. She
started out with the esteemed Ford agency in New York City. Later, having accomplished as a
model what she wanted to accomplish, she set out to be an agency owner. Pommier moved to
Coral Gables and opened an agency and prepared for the deluge she knew would follow. It did,
she stayed, and thousands have made their careers off of her 1979 vision.

This is a new girl from Los Angeles/Hollywood that came in for Swim Week here in Miami Beach.
I got a chance to shoot her over the weekend and we went on to make some iconic images for
not only the agency but also will be published in Esquire Russia.
